Spark co-owners Jan Stephenson Kelly and Amy Appleyard met while attending Boston University's MBA program. In January 2004, the women developed the Spark Craft Studios concept as part of a business plan project for a Social Entrepreneurship class.
Jan and Amy discovered that crafters of all experience levels would enjoy
an inspiring retail store environment delivering a selective mix of high-quality craft supplies
and a stylish, community-oriented atmosphere in which to learn and create.
Encouraging feedback during a business plan presentation in April 2004 further convinced the women to commit to opening Spark Craft Studios.
Between graduation in May 2004 and opening Spark in January 2005, Jan and Amy raised capital from angel investors, family and friends; performed additional market research and began marketing Spark to potential customers; contracted a legal team and accountant; forged relationships with suppliers; found a retail location and negotiated a lease; and hired instructors and staff.
Once Spark is well established locally, the women would like to roll out additional Spark Craft Studios locations first regionally and then nationally.
